Santa Clara Adult Education Classes taught by Janine Sahm Fencing Classes
Fencing Pedagogy (Fencing Masters Program) Dedicated to the professional training and certification of fencing teachers, this class will teach the skills needed to be a confident and effective fencing instructor. Candidates will master the complete theory and practice of the Classical Italian system, with instruction comparable to that one receives in Italy, one of the world’s leading fencing countries. Do not want to be a teacher? Intermediate/advanced fencers wishing to improve their competitive skills or to learn sabre or epee are welcome. Required Text: The Science of Fencing by Dr. William M. Gaugler, available for purchase in class. Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed Fencing-All Levels or have equivalent fencing experience.

Fencing - All Levels All levels welcome! Be part of 500 years of dueling tradition by learning the art and science of fencing. Based on the celebrated Military Masters School in Rome, this system will teach the beginner the fundamentals of the Italian foil, how to move on the strip and execute offensive, defensive, and counteroffensive actions. Intermediate to advanced students will continue to develop their skills while learning the full range of actions. More advanced students will have the opportunity to bout and learn the skills of sabre or epee if desired. Fencing is a workout for body and mind! Develop concentration, economy of motion, and discipline. Participants must be 18 years or older. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. All fencing equipment is supplied.

Fine Art Classes
Linocut/Woodcut Printmaking All skill levels welcome! Students will learn how to carve either a linoleum or wood block, ink it and make a print suitable for framing or making greeting cards. The class will cover such topics as materials, safety, printing, multi-color prints, and more. This form of printmaking does not require a press and is relatively inexpensive. A supply list will be discussed the first day of class. Limited supplies available for use in class.

Drawing - All Levels All skill levels welcome. Learn the basics of working with graphite (pencil) on paper. the beginning student will learn the fundamentals of composition, perspective, and how to render convincing 3D images using light and shadow. Continuing, and advanced, students will continue to develop the basic skills and have the opportunity to work with new tools, such as conte crayon, silverpoint, charcoal, or pen and ink. A supply list will be discussed the first class meeting.

Watercolor/Pen and Ink This class will explore two mediums, watercolor and pen and ink, both individually and how they can be worked together. Students can work solely in watercolor or pen and ink, or they can combine the mediums. Watercolor techniques, such as dry brush, wet on wet, over washes and texture will be demonstrated and practiced. The possibilities of pen and ink will be explored. The student will learn how to make a variety of lines with different materials in order to build rich drawings. Watercolor can be used to tint pen and in drawings, or pen and ink can be used to enhance and give structure to a watercolor. A supply list will be discussed the first day of class.

Fiber Arts and Beading Classes
Knitting and Crocheting for All Levels From scarves to sweaters, from knitting to crocheting, learn the basics of the creative pastimes. No experience? No problem. Beginners will learn the basic stitches, how to read patterns, and how to choose the right yarn and needles/hook. Advanced students will continue to develop their skills by learning to fix mistakes, working with beads, designing their own patterns, or just getting the guidance and motivation needed to finish those unfinished projects. If you already have materials or a project, bring it in. Otherwise, a supply list will be discussed the first night of class.
Beading Techniques Always wanted to make your own earrings? Or learn how to weave a bracelet? Students will learn the basics of stringing, needle weaving, loom weaving and wire wrapping. Guided projects will be given for those who need step-by-step instruction or who are new to beading. More advanced students are welcome to bring their own projects or choose a project from instructor's selection. All supplies will be provided for the guided projects.
