Dr. Gaugler was a pupil of Maestro Aldo Nadi, Italian Professional Champion, Maestro Umberto Di Paola, Director of the Fencing Masters Preparatory Course at the National Institute of Physical Education in Rome, and Maestro Giorgio Pessina, President of the Italian Fencing Masters Association. He holds a fencing master’s diploma from the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma in Naples, Italy. And Professor Gaugler was elected, as an honorary member, to the Italian Fencing Masters Association and to the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma.

Maestro Sahm received his Military Master at Arms certification in 1986 from the SJSU Program. He studied under the founder of the program, Maestro William M. Gaugler beginning in the late 1970s. After his successful completion of the program, Maestro Sahm became a volunteer faculty member, and ultimately Associate Director of the Program, and helped to teach and prepare others for the examination. Maestro Sahm succeeded Maestro Gaugler as Director after his retirement in 2004.

Maestra Sahm received her Master at Arms certification in 2004 from the SJSU Program. She is one of the first women to achieve this internationally recognized certification. In addition to her work with the SJSU Program, she also runs her own fencing classes at Santa Clara Adult Education and teaches at the Accademia di Scherma Classica.

Maestra Sahm holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine art from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She designs and creates hand-crafted products including fencing clothing and accessories.

Maestra Walton received her Master at Arms certification in 2004 from the SJSU Program. She is one of the first women to achieve this internationally recognized certification. In addition to her work with the SJSU Program, she also volunteers at the Accademia di Scherma Classica.
